I recently picked up several items from the estate of illustrator Hugh Rankin. Rankin's main claim to fame is the work he did for the pulp Weird Tales between 1927 and 1936, including for many of Robert E. Howard's stories. Howard even said of him, "I am sort of a fiend about Rankin's illustrations myself..." and wanted to create a display of them.

Besides other magazine and advertising illustration work, Rankin also worked for newspapers, doing strip work as early as 1907. Among the items that were in this batch were nine strips, each composed of four panels, with illos on top and captions below (the glue on the captions hasn't stood the test of time as well, and several captions have fallen off and are missing). These were all for a newspaper strip adaptation of Edgar Wallace's "The India-Rubber Men." I haven't been able to pin down the date on these, but they presumably appeared sometime between 1930 (when the book was published in the U.S.) and 1935 (when a successor strip, "Inspector Wade of Scotland Yard," was being drawn by Lyman Anderson). On the back, Rankin's address is given as his aunt and uncle's house in L.A., where he moved to from Chicago sometime in the 1930's.

Here are the panels for the first installment. If anyone can supply any further info on this strip, I'd love to read it!
