I was attracted to this piece by its draftsmanship especially the use of dry brush, and that it reminded of the work Alex Raymond. I believe Raymond was somewhat influenced by the older Clark. Also funny how Clark signed this in reverse due to it being flipped for publication. Mixed media on 23 x 21 inch thick illustration board. For a story called "Bonanza: Ha Tabor's Silver Empire", American Weekly Magazine 1947.

Beautiful work. Yes, the "chain of influence" begins with Matt Clark, who influenced John La Gatta, and both of whom influenced Alex Raymond. Raymond's style can clearly be seen in many of Clark and La Gatta's black and white inked pieces, especially the ones in which dry brush technique is apparent.

Good to know, I've seen many of La Gatta's color work not so much his B&W, I'll search for them online, thanks!
