This one has me scratching my head a lot, it is well known that Lovecraft surprisingly never had a Weird Tales cover printed in his lifetime, and the only example was from a Canadian variant cover in 1946. Even with his work being a selling force for the magazine his work seemed to lack the inclusion of sexy women which pulp publications needed maybe Pickman's Model would have been a good choice?
Well the origins of this piece are probably as mysterious as the story itself, as documented it was rejected in late 1931 but holds the logo not used to early 1933. Possibly originally drawn up before rejection and later reconsidered for publication as it wasn't picked up by Astonishing Tales till 1936? Its influences from Nicholas Roerich are easy to spot with the artist's works being mentioned several times in the printed tale. I have added a pic of Roerich's work for those who have never had the pleasure of knowing what inspired HPL to write the tale. The artist even used similar style building constructs but naturally adding the five pointed spires as the story required to give the star formation from an aerial perspective. Of course to dramatize the cover three half aquatic or possibly plant formed priests making their way up the snow covered stone bridge.
