DescriptionHard to know where to begin with this one. The arch of Carol’s back in panel one? The position of the books in her hands? The folds of fabric in her dress? Or the sunlight dappling the cottage wall and door behind her. And only someone with Wright’s skill could effectively use an entire panel to convey all the charged emotion intended by the momentary and casual (not!) brushing of hands in panel two. And then there is that profile in panel three, with its cross-hatched face perfectly visible yet in shadow, the sun catching the highlights of blonde hair, white teeth, and pearl earring and necklace.Social/Sharing |

Spectacular. It is amazing how quickly Wright found his style and stride on this strip. I still find it hard to imagine how he managed to do this number dailies per week every week for years and kept up the standards he set so high. The lighting and gestures steal the show on this one.

Incredible Carol Day comic strip by the great David Wright. Another amazing example of Wright's unbelievable skill. That first panel is luscious, with Carol's girlish pose holding the pile of books. I love the way Wright rendered the folds of her dress here. Not to mention the beautiful technique he used to draw the ivy growing on the trellis in the background, complete with shadows on the wall. Even the second panel, with its simple focus on Carol's delicate hands is stunnning. And the final panel, with it focus on Carol's face, where Wright used extensive crosshatching to show she's in the shade, is a master class in inking all by itself. This strip demonstrates why David Wright belongs in the top tier of the great comic strip artists.
