DescriptionA life-long fan of Gene Colan (although I'm not dead yet), I am mighty pleased to add an example of the great man's un-inked pencil artwork to the collection. I went through the comics until I figured out that this tier was intended for Daredevil #24, page 5, but was excised by scripter/editor Stan Lee, likely to move the story along.Genial Gene, whose brilliant cinematic pacing and storytelling were uniquely his own, had already diverted the first four pages of the comic to DD battling a rando band of rebel brigands "in a hostile nation somewhere in Europe." The deleted sequence extends yet another fight scene, prior to DD commandeering a plane which, using only his blindness and complete lack of any piloting skills, he flies to England to encounter Kazar and The Plunderer for that issue's scheduled merriment. In a rare example of kismet, I was recently able to find the complete Daredevil #24 page 5 as printed. It's also included in this gallery for your moral and spiritual upliftment. My recreation of the page as originally conceived by Gene is included in additional images, below. Social/Sharing |

I love the pencils-only side-by-side with the inks. Such a cool look at the art in-the-making.

I believe this time period of Daredevil showcased Gene at his best and this unpublished piece demonstrates his exceptional artistic ability. Congratulations on an outstanding addition to your collection!

Dang! It must've been exciting for Stan when he'd first lay eyes on these pulse pounding pencils from all these top notch artists.

Love this! So great to see raw Colan pencils intended for a classic DD story! The un-inked panel is just perfect --- how many artists can boast work of this quality, much less produce it and then decide to leave it out of the finished story? Thanks for posting!

The published page is great, but this version is special also due to Gene's untouched pencils, great art & observation into his process, I would love to have Colan penciled art from this period. Congrats!
