Description1977-As most of you know,I am not a DC but I loved Newton's art and of all of the DC universe the New Gods resonated with me so really happy to have this page!CL's write up: This Don Newton/Dan Adkins page comes from the first revival of the New Gods, which continued the numbering of Kirby's initial run a few years later. It starts with a panel of Orion punching Dr. Bedlam, but the remainder of the page features the one and only Darkseid, who is not just the main the villain of Kirby's 4th World Saga, but has become one of the biggest villains in the entire DC Universe. Jack Kirby introduced Orion and the rest of the New Gods in 1971's New Gods #1. New Gods was a key book in his "4th World" saga that also included Forever People, Mister Miracle and Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen. Orion has been one of the more popular characters to arise out of Kirby's saga and the character even joined the Justice League for a time. Elements of Kirby's New Gods work have already been introduced into the DC movie universe, with the villain Steppenwolf, who first appeared in New Gods #7, playing the chief villain role in the recently released Justice League film. Darkseid is an important creation of Jack Kirby and has gone on to become the premier cosmic villain of the DC Universe. He was introduced in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #134 (cameo) and Forever People #1 (full). He was the major villain of Kirby's epic saga. After Kirby moved on, other creators picked up on how awesome Darkseid was, particularly Keith Giffen, who used the character very effectively in his historic run on Legion of Superheroes with writer Paul Levitz. Their tale "The Great Darkness Saga" established Darkseid as not just a villain for the New Gods to fight, but a major menace to the entire DC Universe, past, present and future. In the decades since, Darkseid has fought Superman and the Justice League numerous times. Don Newton was a fine artist who the comic book industry sadly lost very early when he passed away at age 49. He was one of the more active producers on Batman during the 1980s. Newton is also remembered for his work on Aquaman, Captain Marvel and the Phantom. Dan Adkins first broke into the business as an assistant to Wally Wood in the mid-60s. By the late 60s, he was the regular penciler on Doctor Strange, following in the footsteps of such greats as Steve Ditko, Bill Everett and Marie Severin. Adkins would go on to have a long career at Marvel and DC, working primarily as an inker throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Social/Sharing |
