Description

After watching a Jim Lee video and reading X-Men: Gold #30, I was inspired to take a shot at sketching everyone's favorite ragin' Cajun. But I wanted to do something a little difference with this pinup. I wanted to experiment with how the kinetic energy Remy LeBeau emits when he charges up a card interacts with its environment. How bright would the epicenter be? What would it look like as the only light source in a given space? Etched in mixed media on 9 x 12" Biengfang, I maintained a color range within the red-violet spectrum, then superimposed some regular colors in areas of shadow. Thankfully shiny surfaces such as Gambit's gloves and his purple body armor only needed minor accents to distinguish surface texture. And yes that is Mystique's mantra - "Mutant and Proud" - from the recent X-films hinted at in the background. I feel that I captured Remy's suave charm in his smirk because that is key with this character. He's a thief and a ladies' man by both passion and trade. I even showed distinction by rendering his five o'clock shadow in inks in normal flesh tones, and in HB pencil in the areas closest to the light source. Overall this was a complete success and can't wait to see how fans react.
