Mooch (Mutts) by Patrick McDonnell, San Francisco

      Patrick McDonnell gave an illustrated talk at Books, Inc. in San Francisco years ago. He had a large 18" x 24" drawing pad and drew his characters as he talked about his Mutts comic strip. At the end, the local humane society accepted donations for the drawings. I managed to snag this illustration of Mooch.

Second Saturday Cartoonist: Mutts Creator Patrick McDonnell -- 1:00 - 3:00 pm

In celebration of the Year of the Dog, award-winning cartoonist Patrick McDonnell, creator of the comic strip, Mutts, will talk about his favorite mutts including Snoopy and real life dogs. McDonnell’s comic strip appears in over 700 newspapers in 20 countries. McDonnell has received numerous awards, including the National Cartoonists Society’s highest honor, The Reuben, for Cartoonist of the Year; and five Harvey Awards for Best Comic Strip. McDonnell also writes and illustrates children’s books including The Gift of Nothing (2005), which quickly became a New York Times Best Seller. Since then, he has produced nine additional children’s books including the 2012 Caldecott Honor winner Me…Jane, a biography about the young Jane Goodall, and The Monsters’ Monster. McDonnell will sign books after his talk, including his newest collection of Mutts comics called You Have Those Wild Eyes Again, Mooch.
