Description

Very lucky to get this via a trade... a wonderful pencil preliminary to the cover for a Baltimore sf/f convention program book.
The painting was published several times in its history: as a front cover for Balticon #25 in 1991, as a dustjacket in 1993 for Snow White, Blood Red book edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling, and as a non-sports card in 1996. Currently the painting is owned by well known collector MB of the UK.
The pencil prelim itself was partial published in 3 different cards at the verso of Thomas Canty Fantasy Art trading cards done by FPG (Friedlander Publishing Group) in 1996.
Mr. Canty stated in card #87 ..." Something of a turning point in my artwork, this picture is darker and more fully rendered than anything that came before. Throughout, I was experimenting." Getting a prelim...not too shabby.
Circa early 1990s. Size is a 13.75 by 17 inches on vellum...this might have been the inner sheet as the outer sheet covered curtains on the left side, the arch on the top border and design of the base of the French style chaise lounge chair lower border...might have to ask Mr. Canty if this outer sheet still exist???
