Description
This 18" x 24" original oil painting of a sunset on the bay at Brigantine, New Jersey was completed in 1967 by the esteemed illustrator Russell Patterson.

Patterson became famous in New York City during the Jazz Age, when he regularly drew covers and interior illustrations of flapper girls for magazines such as Life, The Saturday Evening Post, and Vanity Fair.

He moved to Hollywood in the 1930s, where he worked on production design for Spencer Tracy and Martha Raye films, tailored Shirley Temple's costumes, and appeared in a Jack Benny musical comedy called Artists and Models (1937).

He then returned to New York to decorate the Christmas toy windows for Macy’s.

During World War II, he designed the Women's Army Corps uniforms, and, in 1951, created the cartoon strip "Mamie."

He also judged Miss America contests from 1927 to 1945.

Patterson would eventually retire to the island of Brigantine. He passed away of heart failure in nearby Atlantic City five years later, according to his New York Times obituary.
