Description
Welcome to 2019, fellow collectors – hope the start is treating you all well!

I began 2016 with my first Art Adams piece, ’17 with my first Keown, ’18 with my first Quesada, so thought I’d keep the theme going by starting off ’19 with my first piece by the legendary John Buscema! Also got inks by prolific Marvel penciller and inker of the time Jim Mooney!

And this will by my first of 4 Black Panther (BP) posts over the next month or so by creators that have all had big contributions (and runs!) to BP’s rich history – so stay tuned! Been one of my collector objectives as a big BP fan. Had a great 2018 in that regard and I’m keepin’ it movin’ right into ’19, starting out with Buscema here, who illustrated the Panther’s initial run as part of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!

Got this at Heritage’s most recent Signature Auction. Many team members featured and a nice shot of BP in the upper right! Also love seeing sound effect lettering drawn right on the page like in the upper left – “KA-ROOM”! What really sealed this for me was the dialogue, namely BP’s affirmation that his name and title are indeed the Black Panther, as opposed to the Black Leopard which he had been using in the recent months. Marvel changed his name so the character would not be associated with the Black Panther Party, which rose in prominence, during this time. I believe writer Roy Thomas, who introduced the Black Leopard moniker in the comics, said there was no support or condemning from their end – they were just differentiating the character. In any case, I think most were glad to see the true name back! Lastly, it’s cool to see BP leading the Avengers...and having that no nonsense attitude with ‘em in that last panel! Fun stuff.

So a nice piece of art and a nice little piece of history, too! Thanks for looking!

Beautiful Buscema page. Love the bottom panel with Tchalla guiding Odinson and other key avenger members. Great start to 2019

Spectacular pickup. The art is striking but the dialogue. Whoa. Just great piece. Congrats.

Yup, John, my thoughts exactly when I was bidding on it.  The dialogue was key!  Thanks for the comments, all!

It's always something special to own a page where a main character declares his own name and identity. An excellent choice for the first Big John's piece in your collection!

Totally agree, Davide - some of my favorite pages!  Especially cool here considering why the name was changed in the first place.  And as you do like these name/identity declaration pages be sure to check out my Lim Silver Surfer and Neary Captain America splashes - I think you'll dig 'em!  Thanks for the comment!

The Avengers team led by BP on a half splash page by Buscema! Doesn’t get any better than this! Great way to start the New Years K!

Actually, *this* is the page where I should have mentioned how cool it is that the Black Panther is currently the chairperson & leader of the new Avengers team in the comic books.  Cuz here he is leading them again so many years earlier.

Yup Paul, I agree, it is cool to see!  Wondering if T'Challa's new Avengers leadership role in the comics is a foretelling of things to come in the MCU?!  We shall see!  Thanks for the comments, man!

You wrote the perfect description for this page. As the "Black Panther Guy," you have the perfect BP page in your collection. What more could a collector following a theme ask for?

What a classic looking piece of wonderful comic book art! I haven't read Silver Age Avengers or anything before Busiek's run for that matter, but now I want to read through more of John Buscema's work. My favorite part of the page is the final panel where BP has the lead and warns his team of impending danger. I'm starting to understand narratively why you appreciate BP's character so much.

Thanks for sharing!

Hey, much appreciated, Ryan! Definitely a piece that hits on a few collector fronts for me :)

I actually didn't know a lot of Silver and Bronze stuff myself. My BP reading was more modern stuff, too, but as I grew as a fan of the character I went back and read up on some particular stories. And knowing, art-wise, that John Buscema worked on the character almost as much as anyone in the Avengers title...had to check it out, y'know?!

And it's cool you can see in part what I like about the Panther with this page...ALWAYS cool when it comes to OA :)

John Buscema Panther!  This is the BP of my youth, when T'Challa was my favorite Avenger with the coolest costume around.

Fantastic Mooney inks, a great half-splash with a superb angle from JB, and a bit of character history thrown in - superb page!
