Description
I knew very little about Baudoin or his art other than I had an instant attraction to it. On 2DGalleries which is the European equivalent of CAF there are many pages by him on display and despite some truly spectacular pages by other artists in various galleries, Baudoin's art is among my favorite in all the art that is on the site. I was in Paris after attending the Angouleme Festival B-D this year and was visiting original comic art galleries with a friend when I came across this page. I asked them to keep an eye out for art by Baudoin and it just so happened they had a stack of about 50 page of his art there. I was so happy to be able to go through but then came the realization that I liked most of the pages I saw and now had to come to a decision. I chose this page. I prefer his older style with more blacks and contrast. There is something so visceral and organic about his work. My understanding of his work is that is very poetic but also very depressing and dark. Baudoin was also part of a generation of artists who got an early break from Futuropolis which I learned about while in Angouleme. Futuropolis was a very influential publisher in the 70's producing many ground breaking books and full of high quality art that started a revolution and gave birth to Metal Hurlant which was published as Heavy Metal in North America.

Love Baudoin, as you know, and this is a stunning page from one of my favorite of his books.  Nice mini-history in the description.  I put together a near-complete set of every Futuropolis book--amazing and massively influential publisher. Most of them are now at the Columbia Library.
