DescriptionThis one just melts my brain; a beautiful gem of a spread, with an insane level of detail and character everywhere you look. Rubble, laser pistols, clothing, FINGERNAILS… you name it - it's all gorgeously rendered. Plus - hey! Skrulls!(For those keeping track of “birth pages” or significant appearances, this spread marks the second time that the Skrull Queen, Veranke, appears on a comic page. Her first appearance was on the page before this…) One of the (many absolutely bonkers) details I love about this is actually the sixth panel; the bag-over-the-head / blackout panel. Rather than going with just solid black there, Jim and John opted for a super-tight hatching pattern in the upper left corner of the panel, allowing a little light to fight its way through the bag…in vain. It strikes me as something you’d find in Gerhard’s work; a subtle, beautiful, crazy detail standing as a testament to the level of investment and commitment of the artistic team. Knowing the window of time this page would have to have been produced in, there's a chance (rare, but possible) that Mssrs. Cheung and/or Dell were working on this very spread the day my son was born. I like to think that was EXACTLY what happened. :) Social/Sharing |
