DescriptionInk and watercolor on 9" x 12" Bristol board.Produced as a pitch piece for Jack Mendelsohn for an updated Little Orphan Annie cartoon feature, this piece of original art shows the young Soo San, who was intended as part of the supporting cast. The concept for this new animated series was a more action-adventure blend of Annie and Jonny Quest. The image appears on Page 324 of the hardback Genius Animated: The Cartoon Art of Alex Toth. Alex Toth was a true genius when it came to designing characters. A truly wonderful example on display here..Congrats.

Andrew, I'm interested in where you learned that this was for Jack Mendelsohn? I ask because I have one of the design pieces as well. I have Andro and Dr Ezra Eon. I had been assuming that he was pitching to Hanna Barbara, because they worked with him on so many animation projects.
Really happy to learn the real story behind it, and not just be guessing. Thanks for putting your's up, and filling me in a little. It makes me super happy to own a neat Toth piece. Sure you feel the same, congrats on a neat piece!

Hi Keith, I'm so sorry to get back to you so late—I'm not very good at keeping up with messages here :)
I more or less copied and pasted the description from Heritage Auctions, which is where I purchased this piece. You can see the information here. However, it's confirmed from Mr. Mendelsohn himself in this issue of Alter Ego—scroll down to page 15, "Jack Mendelsohn reminisces about Alex Toth," for a brief mention of his commissioning Annie.
