Description

Robert E. Howard's legendary character, Conan, first appeared in the December 1932 issue of the pulp, Weird Tales, in the story "The Phoenix on the Sword." This beautiful copy of that issue will be auctioned in the first part of the Robert Weinberg Estate Auction being held at the 2019 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (April 12-14, 2019 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center). The auction will be held on the evening of Friday, April 12, 2019.

Images of all auction items (for both our Friday night auction as well as our Saturday night auction, featuring material from the estate of Glenn Lord, who for many years was the literary executor of the estate of Robert E. Howard) are now available for viewing on the Photos section of the Windy City Pulp FB page, as well as on our website, www.windycitypulpandpaper.com. Absentee bidding is now also available through our website, if you can't attend the con.

Here's a composite scan of the issue to be auctioned, showing both covers and spine. The gorgeous cover by J. Allen St. John illustrates an installment of "The Buccaneers of Venus" by Otis Adelbert Kline, who's planetary romance tales were in the same vein as those of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
