DescriptionThis is the first page (second, in reality, but the first one I have in my hands) by the talented Stuart Immonen that I add to my collection. Only you fellow collectors can understand what receiving a first page from a great artist feels like. Hint, hint, it's amazing!!I'm usually more of an old school guy when it comes to lettering and I love me some pages with balloons, yet I've got to admit that this balloon-less page is just fine as it is. You can understand everything that happens without any dialogues needed as Norman's behavior is so explicit and clearly depicted. A testimony to how impressive a storyteller Stuart is. The inking by Wade von Grawbadger is the perfect complement to Stuart's work in general and more particularly on this page. As a matter of fact, the use of the light source coming from the right-side of the first panels reinforces that sequence very nicely. And, yeah, I know that that last panel is obviously the one that catches your eye, but the money shots for me are the first three panels with Norman's various expressions. (Any aspiring artist could learn from this little sequence.) Those are the images that convinced me of buying this page, actually. Stuart and Wade captured to the perfection Norman's two-face nature with his expressive face partially blacked out. Now that here is malice and malevolence in that second panel or I don't know my villains! Of course, writer Dan Slott and Stuart option to use POV sequences throughout this issue are sheer brilliance to maintain the suspense and illustrate with brio the fact that Norman addresses someone he kidnapped and that we, readers, don't know the identity of. Only to discover at the very last page that it is in reality... OK, don't worry, I won't tell for those that haven't read it. Fun fact: I had the choice between buying this page and the following one, more action-oriented with the Goblin King attacking Norman with his flaming sword, but I went for this page instead since the storytelling aspect has almost always more appeal to me in comparison. Great page. I agree that the heavy use of blacks and the first 3 panels sequence are the true incentive here. That being said, the following page must also look incredible in b&w ;)

Immonen and Wade were the perfect combo during their run on ASM. You picked a great example, congrats!

You’re right about those top 3 panels! Some great storytelling through Norman’s expressions and the use of shading! The Goblin King shot at the bottom is a nice bonus. Congrats!
