Description

Detective Comics #940 (2016) original cover art for "Rise of the Batmen, Part 7: The Red Badge of Courage". This magnificent piece features the death of Red Robin, a story having an immediate and huge impact on Batman and the team as well as the future direction of Detective Comics. Batman and his team are fully shown, surrounding the body of Robin. The art was pencilled by Eddy Barrows, who also used copic markers for fuller effect. Eber Ferreira completed the image with his extraordinary inks! Image is on standard 11"X17" DC art board.

DC asked for a number of changes to the original cover art, resulting in a number of patches.

The first patch is obvious to readers of the book. Eddy Barrows originally depicted the broken body of Red Robin laying on the ground in the center of the piece. PATCH art was created to cover Red Robin's body to portray a fallen soldier. This soldier patch was drawn on 8 x 11" standard office paper.

Editorial asked Eddy to redraw Batman as cape-covered, and Eddy drew a full figured Batman on standard 11 x 17" Bristol board. This 2nd patch was reduced, copied and physically adhered to the original cover artwork, unfortunately meaning that the original image is not viewable. I do happen to have the final prelim that Eddy did for this cover that depicts Batman in the original form in a separate listing. What is cool about this is that this image is essentially a standalone full size pinup of Batman!

The 3rd patch is of Clayface's arm, which was digitally placed over Red Robin's standing form, to remove the character from the image, if editors chose to do that.

In total, there are 4 pieces of artwork, 2 full size (cover and Batman image) and 2 small images (1st and 3rd patch).
