“Can’t Be Secretariat” (September 4, 1973)

A native Bostonian, Germano became a full-time cartoonist in 1948, at age 24, after serving in WWII. Among other positions, he worked as the editorial and sports cartoonist for the Brockton Enterprise from 1963-1990.

Secretariat was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who, on June 9, 1973, became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years, with a net worth of over $6M. The horse’s retirement was announced at the beginning of July, at an event that would be held on Election Day, November 5.

This cartoon is just gross.
