DescriptionHarry Furniss (1854-1925) was a prolific British magazine and book illustrator, most well-known for the 14 years he spent at Punch, from 1880 to 1894. During that time, the prolific Furniss created over 2600 cartoons for the magazine, including many cartoons harpooning the British Parliament. This cartoon, from Furniss' "Essence of Parliament: Extracted from the Diary of Toby, M.P." series, was a fictitious diary account of the happenings in the Parliament. This cartoon features a number of politicians, including a wonderful caricature of Prime Minister William Gladstone wielding a club. The text that accompanied the cartoon reads:"House of Commons, Wednesday. – New Session opens to-morrow; old one seems to have closed only yesterday. Time coming when we shall refuse to make two bites at the cherry, and, meeting on 1st of January, shall adjourn on Christmas Eve, as we did last year. Found OLD MORALITY here [William Henry Smith, M.P.] taking last glance round before battle begins. Looks plump and pleasant. Has laid new stock of copybook headings, a few culled from foreign languages. “A little more flowery some of them,” he said, affectionately turning over leaves of stout note-book, “but I fancy they’ll fit in.” “Heard you were not coming back,” I said. “Reported that you were going a step higher to consort with the Barons of England.” “Well, if you listen attentively you may hear a good deal of me that is not actually consonant with truth. Never was any foundation for this particular fable. Shall never desert the Commons until they wear me out.” Glad to hear this. OLD MORALITY not as brilliant as DIZZY [Benjamin Disraeli] nor as eloquent as GLADSTONE. But everybody likes him, and wishes him luck in the new Session. Business done. – Going to begin." From February 23, 1889. Social/Sharing |
