Description

SCUTTLE WATCH is the only book ever fully illustrated by Alex Raymond. Raymond drew the dust-jacket art, the endpapers, decorations and full illustrations throughout this novel by Marion Crowell Ryder, which was published in 1941 by Alfred A. Knopf. This SCUTTLE WATCH illustration is drawn on a large 14 1/2" x 19 1/2" art board.

In pencil on the lower left-hand corner, Raymond wrote out the passage he was drawing, "'SCUTTLE WATCH' Alec fetched some scraps of sail cloth from a locker in the fo'c'sle and sewed two white pitches on the seat of the trousers (page 30)" The page number must have been the manuscript, since the illustration itself appears on page 42 and the words Raymond quotes are on page 41.
