Description

For me, one of the things that makes for a great page of comic art is visual storytelling. While splash pages and covers can be nice (and are more desired by many in the hobby), nothing beats a really nice page that tells a story. And this Rom page has that in spades!

I like how the artist starts out with many smaller panels at the top of the page and slowly transitions to larger panels by the end. And talk about jam-packed with story! You've got a woman being dragged off by the Hellhounds of the Dark Nebula, a Dire Wraith transformation, the introduction of a new side character, and they even managed to squeeze a little Rom in there, too. This is what comic book art was meant to be. Many modern pages lack these aesthetics of storytelling, that a classic page like this exemplifies. It's part of the reason I think much of the modern stuff can't hold a candle to the old standards, like this one.

Speaking of "old standards," you'd be hard pressed to find an artist that embodies them more than Sal Buscema. With a career literally spanning over five decades, there's very few artists who can boast his longevity in the biz, or the quantity of his body of work over that time period. From Captain America to Superman, from Spider-Man to the Hulk, there are very few iconic characters who haven't felt the touch of his pencils (and inks). But Rom will always hold a special place with me, as some of the finest work in his very long and distinguished career.

Visual storytelling has really become a lost art in comics today, with many going more for style over substance and razzle-dazzle over the fundamentals of great storytelling. But such skills aren't lost on me and that why I'll always be happy to add a great example of such to my comic art collection, just as I do this one!

Man, this page has a lot going on! Those top 4 panels with the Kirby Krackle, baddies, and a portal, are very cool. The second three...Wraith transformation! And some nice baddie exposition, as they do. Then the last two panels, with a fiery Rom bust image. Complex rendering to simple, 4 panels to three, even the layout was designed to support the images. Great find! Congrats
