DescriptionE.H. Shepard (1879-1976) remains one of my favorites of the British cartoonists-illustrators. I owned a later Punch piece years ago, but it was mostly a border drawing, albeit a sweet one. This cartoon is from the January 23, 1924 issue of Punch and features two women chatting at a party. The woman with the backless dark dress inquires, "Quick, Mollie -- Tell Me -- Am I showing too much ear?" Shepard contributed drawings to Punch during WWI, but did not become a regular cartoonist for the magazine until 1921, so this is fairly early in his run with the publication. Sweet, lively drawing by one of the great British cartoonists of the 20th century.Social/Sharing |
