DescriptionI’ve started off the last so many years with my first pieces by various artists so I’m continuing that trend in 2020 with my first Pepe Larraz! And it’s his rendition of one of my favorite characters in the Black Panther! GOOD stuff.Larraz is a real up and comer. One of last year’s Marvel Young Guns crop, he’s recently been getting some well deserved pub for his work on the X books. He does most of his work digitally so I’m particularly glad to have nabbed this, though I’m pretty sure it won’t be my last piece by him. I got it in a sale/trade deal with another CAFer. His name might be David :) It’s funny, when he told me about when he originally got it, directly from Pepe at a con, he didn’t mean to get it personalized. Pepe casually asked his name and he just wrote “to David” straight away and David had no idea he was going to. Did not hinder me from being the next owner, though! This was used as one of a batch of promo images promoting the characters that would make up the new Avengers team as part of Jason Aaron/Ed McGuinness’s relaunch of the book. Check out the additional published image for colors and to see BP alongside Thor. Love the pose and look on the King of Wakanda here. Got that “best watch out” vibe to it! What took it over the top for me was the tonal work - one of Pepe’s strong suits, IMO, along with his design sensibilities. If you haven’t checked out Larraz’s work, I’d encourage you to do so - one of my new favorite modern artists! Hope you like! Social/Sharing |

I agree, that is some beautiful tonal work. No one has a Black Panther collection like you, and this piece confirms it. Congrats!

Appreciate that, Paul - this was a big addition! And there's definitely more BP on the way! Thanks, all, for the comments!

I mean you could legally change your name to David.
Think of the nicknames. Dave. Davey. Big D. Big Daddy.
Hmmmm. Could also go to Little D as well I guess. Perhaps you shouldn't change name after all.

Thanks for looking at this from all angles and vetting for me, John - I'll take it under consideration :)

Absolutely fantastic. Larraz is a young master of the medium and I'm SO excited to see where he goes in his future projects; I see a lot of Immonen and Coipel touches in his work (both of which I think are present in this gorgeous piece), but with a style that is wholly his own. Beautiful piece! What a great rendition of the Panther!

GREAT comment, Jason, much appreciated! You pretty much said it all. Larraz is one of my top new fave artists...and he continues to get better and better. I don't think this piece will be my last :)

This artist is SERIOUSLY underrated, he could be HUGE in the coming years. Nice snag! If you weren't such a seriously nice dude it would be easy to say "Grrrr...HOW does this Gearon guy do it, and can he be defeated in time???" : ) : ) : )

Larraz rocks, man, straight up. He's already SO good and continues to improve. And yeah, I am a nice guy. Lucky for you. As I cannot. Be. Defeated. ;) I kid, brother! Appreciate the comments as always!
