DescriptionA new commission to start off the New Year: All-Star Squadron #102, art by Brendon and Brian Fraim. As always, this is based on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case X-Men #22, original art by Werner Roth and Dick Ayers.I have to say I was absolutely delighted with this one (which starts a multi-part story), both when I figured out who the extra team member could be to make the cover work, and with the visuals which the Fraims have done. Hope you enjoy it! Title: "The Monsters are Due ... in 1942!" Story: Mr Mind, deciding he has unfinished business with the All-Star Squadron, rebuilds his Mindtripper and returns to Earth. His super-science restores Oom The Mighty to life (he was 'destroyed' by GL in issue #54), and the recreated Red Moonstone of Yzgartyl allows him to control the behemoth. The two villains free their former comrades Nyola, the Dummy, Mr Who, and Ramulus from prison - as well as Ramulus' cellmate, the costumed Buzzard (the foe of the Manhunter from Adventure Comics #73), who joins the team. Following Mr Mind's strategy, the villains agree to target heroes who they've not fought before (and yes, I lifted this plot from Marvel's "Acts Of Vengeance" - a good idea is a good idea, right?). In short order, Mr Mind and his Mindtripper defeat Hawkman; the Dummy ambushes and beats Dr Mid-Nite; Ramulus uses his tendrils of terror to ensnare the Crimson Avenger and Wing; and Oom pummels Wonder Woman into submission. With the first heroes downed, the villains prepare to assault more Squadron members --- next issue! Social/Sharing |
