DescriptionLast year I started off the year with a string of pieces featuring one of my absolute fave characters in Black Panther (BP), so I figured why not ring in 2020 the same way?! Next addition after my Larraz piece – a killer pin up by the dynamic duo of Brett Booth and Matt “BATT” Banning!It’s funny – I knew Brett would do a nice BP and I planned to commission him at Fan Expo Dallas last year. As I get to his booth and start flipping through his portfolios though, there’s already this 11x17 piece with BP front and center, flanked by Black Widow and Daredevil - a couple nice bonuses there! So, we quickly worked out price, and it was mine! His piece was pencils only (see additional image in this post) with some great rendering. I also like how he takes a little license with costumes, making his own little tweaks, like with all 3 characters here. BP particularly is kind of a mix of the comics and movie costumes. So, loved the piece, but also wondered how it would look inked. But I wanted to keep Brett’s original pencils as, again, there’s some nice rendering to behold. I tabled the thought, but when I attended Phoenix Comic Fest later that year, the idea popped back up when I was chatting with Matt Banning. Floated the idea and he was all about it. It was the first time I ever had a scan of a piece inked so wasn’t 100% sure what to expect, but as you can see I’m very happy with the outcome! I thought Matt would be a good inking choice particularly for Brett and yeah, I think I was right :) As always, thanks for looking! Social/Sharing |

Well, that just seems like the perfect string of events to end up with a dream BP piece like this one. Now you have both the penciled and inked versions to enjoy, which is very cool. And I agree, BATT was an EXCELLENT choice for an inker. Major congrats!

Oh yeah, Steven?! I'd check more out - definitely some nice published and non-published stuff out there. I know he used to do "Sketch Saturday", too, but not sure if he keeps that up. Thanks for the comment!
