Description

New commission: All-Star Squadron #101, art by Danny Phillips. As always, this is based on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case King Conan #4, original art by John Buscema and Ernie Chan.

I think Danny did an absolutely fantastic job with this one!

Title: In Days Of Old...

Story: this is the latest of the regular "Altered Egos" spotlight issues (following issues #77, 84 and 92 - though the last is still in production), in which Jonathan (Tarantula) Law sits down with one of his comrades to take notes for his published-after-the-war book.

This time, the Shining Knight explains what happened after All-Star Squadron #49 - although Wotan was seemingly defeated by Dr Fate, when Kent Nelson had to fly the injured Rex Tyler to hospital, the evil mystic revived, and tried once again to get Sir Justin to ally with him --- by offering to transport him back through time to his native Camelot!

As the Knight had faced a similar temptation before - while he and the other members of the Seven Soldiers were facing Dr Doome (in Leading Comics #3 / All-Star Squadron #29), he was able to resist, and continued the fight with Wotan --- but the villain ultimately escaped, and would return shortly afterwards to pit the All-Stars against each other in issues #70-75!

I thought this was a fantastic cover to adapt for the Shining Knight, and it gave me the opportunity to explain how Wotan popped up again in some of my earliest commissions, soon after being supposedly defeated in issue #49. Think of it as retro-retroactive continuity.
