Description

Again, while Tarzan was the template for all of the jungle heroes, Sheena was the template for female heroes. She was the first, appearing in England 1937, years before Wonder Woman or even Batman. Sheena first appeared in the US in 1939 in the pages of Fiction House's Jumbo Comics #1. Then, she appeared in every issue of the title from Sept. 1938 to April 1953. In addition, she was the first female character to have her own book; 18 issues of Sheena, Queen of the Jungle appeared from Spring 1942 to Winter 1952.

There were many artists that drew Sheena including Mort Meskin, Bob Powell, Matt Baker, and Jack Kamen, John Forte, "and other artists in the Iger Shop." to name just a few. Robert Webb is often felt to be the premier Sheena artist, as he is attributed as the penciler to so many stories. However, records from a historian who communicated with Iger suggest that Webb handled all of the penciling and layout chores for the Sheena stories but never actually drew Sheena! Iger reserved that the Good Girl Art "masters" of his shop, like Matt Baker or Jack Kamen. The feature was created in an assembly line fashion, with each artist contributing their own elements. To "unify" the package, Webb's principal inker, David Heames, would ink the entire story to cover up any differences in artist's styles. Taking that into consideration, who knows who actually drew this??
