Description

While Tarzan was the basic template of all the jungle heroes, you have to admit that there seemed to be more Jungle Girls than guys in the comics during the 1940s and 50s. Of course, there was Kaanga, Thun'da, Kazar and the totally unforgettable (said with tongue firmly in cheek) JoJo Jungle King. But there was also The Red Panther. He first appeared in Jungle #2 (Feb 1940) and ran through issue 26, so this page is from a bit late in his tenure.

As several historians point out, it is tough to put this character in a "box" Kind of like Tarzan, king of like the Phantom, and kind of "super" as he had the abilities of a panther and the ability to teleport short distances, appearing in a flash of red light. The stories say he got his uniform, which is basically a hood, loincloth, and boots, from the skin of the mythical Red Panther to act as the protector of people who cannot defend themselves.

This page is interesting to me for several reasons... first the close-ups of the character showing his ability to call panthers, but also the fifth panel showing the renegades running from the cats... classic 40s exaggerated figures.
