Description

To my knowledge, this is the only watercolor by Alex Raymond which shows both Flash Gordon and Secret Agent X-9. Although it is undated, it was probably done in 1935, when Flash wore this helmut. Raymond did one other watercolor of Secret Agent X-9, which was made for promotional purposes. There is one other watercolor of Flash Gordon (alone) by Raymond, which, like this piece, was obviously done for a fan -- it is similarly inscribed, but is signed "Flash Gordon" instead of "Alex Raymond." Again, based on the costume worn by Flash, this other watercolor must have been done a little later, either the end of 1935 or the beginning of 1936.

A third, somewhat fadeed, watercolor of Flash Gordon alone turned up several years after the above description was written.

Of the hundreds of pieces of art that I have bought at auctions, this is one of only four that were shown on the front cover of the catalogues for the sales. [The other three were the Peanuts daily for 11 Sep 1962, the Pogo for 25 Dec 1969, and a 1921 Krazy Kat that I no longer own.] This was probably a good thing for me, since cover pieces often sell for unreasonably high prices -- which is why action houses generally charge consignors much more for cover illustrations than for interior photos.
