Description

Charles Nelan (1859-1904) was a well-known American political cartoonist who started his career in 1888 on the staff of the Cleveland Penny Press. In the late 1890s Nelan moved to New York City and worked for a two-year stint at the New York Herald, before winding up his career with the Philadelphia North American. Nelanfs cartoons about the Spanish-American War were published in book form (titled, gCartoons of Our War with Spainh) in 1898. Nelan sadly died at the all-too-young age of 45 of what was then called Consumption, and what we now know as Tuberculosis.

Ifm quite pleased to be able to offer a rare and HUGE political from 1904, the year of Nelanfs passing. The cartoon has to do with the Russo-Japanese War, which began with a night attack by Japanese destroyers in Port Arthur, located in Manchuria. The war lasted through 1904, though this particular cartoon appeared in print in May of that year. Though undated, the Hatsuse was a Shikishima-class pre-dreadnought battleship that played an active role during the Russo-Japanese War. In May 1904, the battleship struck two Russian mines just off of Port Arthur and the ship sunk immediately, killing half its crew. Nelan appears to have created a slightly crazed caricature of Nicholas II, the Emperor of Russia at the time, as he hold ropes tied to the mines around Port Arthur, with the Hatsuse sinking in the background. The Emperor says, gGreat Scottsky, why didnft I think of this before.h

Being so early, itfs difficult finding Nelanfs work in print, but I did manage to find a tearsheet of this one with a slightly different caption, printed in the Sterling Farm Journal of Sterling, Kansas on June 10, 1904. This makes sense given distribution in the country at the time. As you can see in the additional image, the cartoon was titled, gRejoicing Over His Only gVictoryhh, as the public must have seen this nothing to rejoice over. The artwork measures a gigantic 22hx 21h and is in remarkably good condition given is age of 116 years old. Itfs about as close to Excellent condition as you can get given its age. The drawing is strong and bold, with some wonderful shading. Very typical of Nelanfs scarce work. For political cartoon collectors, this is a gem of a piece. $300.00 + 20.00 Priority shipping.
