DescriptionPretty wicked rendition here of the Spirit of Vengeance!I picked up this penciled pin up by Booth years back on eBay. Just loved the stance, all the flames, the bike in the background, and that it took up a whole 11x17 board. I also dug the tweaks he made to the costume: jacket and pants are bit of a different style, chain around the belt, etc. And I REALLY liked how some spots of the jacket/pants are burnt through – a nice subtle touch that pops. Good example is his rib cage showing under his left arm! Booth kills it with these full figure pin ups and this was no exception. When I got in the mail I liked it right away but also thought all that fiery detailing would look pretty cool inked, too. So, I thought “yeah, I’ll do that one day”. But never got around to it. I picked up a different piece directly from Brett at a con – Black Panther/Black Widow/Daredevil (see in my gallery) – and had Matt “BATT” Banning ink a scanned blue line print out and I was really happy with the result. So, I thought “it’s GR’s turn” :) Thankfully, John Livesay was up for it! Some precise lines for sure but also like the additional organic quality he brought, including the enhanced swirling flames in the foreground vs. the dark background. Also those additional effects rock – adding some black and white spatter. He told me the white specks are like burning embers coming from the jacket :) I know John got some good feedback after he posted on Twitter, too! It’s actually really cool looking at the penciled and inked pieces side by side – hope you like! Social/Sharing |

The inked piece is on fire! The bike, the chains, his costume and all the flames... Fantastic!
What's next? Getting it digital colored? 😉

Thanks for the add, Vik. Interestingly enough I just found this on YouTube! As some of us felt this piece was screaming to be inked it looks like a prior owner may have thought similarly, but that it was screaming to colored :)

Wow, it looks great! As Troy said above, I think the pencils were screaming to be inked and John did a really bang up job. As you mentioned, I also like the exposed ribs, very cool. But it now makes me think, was he always imagined as a pure skeleton? Myself I always only imagined the head to be a skull, withthe rest of the body being flesh and blood.

"Screaming to be inked" is a good way to put - instantly felt that way when I got the pencil piece in hand...clearly we were right :) John killed it.
As far as the skeleton goes...I guess I never really knew! I thought it was maybe a full skeleton but the flames knew not to go through the leather?! I remember the first GR movie with Nic Cage and he had a t-shirt on under the leather jacket. When he changed to GR the t-shirt stayed intact. I was like "hmmm....that doesn't seem right" :)
In any case thanks, as always Ruben, and all, for the "searing" comments :)

OH, having an incredible inker do such justice to an already brilliant penciled piece is TIGHT! (Don't know if you watch 'Pitch meetings' on youtube, but if you do, then you'll get that reference haha). Seriously, these inks are stunning! And yeah, the way the art covers the entire board ... that must be an awe-inspiring sight in person. Love everything about this one. Congrats!!

Very cool! Well done! I’m in a similar place and would love to get an Aquaman inked but struggling to spend the money. Maybe one day!

Yowza! REALLY love this one and all the "heat" it gives off - love the ash swirls and how "dirty" everything is with the ink spatter... The top of his skull looks almost like burned skin with nubs of hair... Even more terrifying than a "regular" Ghost Rider skull!
Really great inking, and fun to compare/contrast with your excellent Bachalo/Livesay pieces from last week. Congrats! Great inking choice / project! :)

Thanks, Jason! It didn't occur to me when I got the Bachalo pages to ask John but as I was flipping through one of my portfolios and saw the GR piece I got reminded and BAM asked straight away! Really glad he was able to do it!

We're packing hot dogs for the road. You know hot dogs get a bad rap? They got a cool shape, they got protein. You like hot dogs, right?

What an awesome drawing of the Ghost Rider! I can feel the vengeance. 100% agreed that those burning ribs are great details. Very nice pick-up

I love Booths draftsmanship. Been chasing the right peice for years, but for me, he's one of the artists that really needs to be inked. You know it's a really great piece when it's not even one of your favorite characters but the skill, the impact, blow you away. The background, the pose, love it. But the eyes have a hold of me. He's looking right at me, and he's got me.
