Description

New purchase from Alex C. (Highly recommended!). This is a prelim by Robert Maguire. I’ve read that after he did his preliminary sketches he would also do some preliminary color tests before going to final painting. You can see quite a bit changed from prelim to the final paint. Yet you can still see that he stuck to the general color theme and the same layout with the spooky tree and the moon rising over the top of the castle/house in the background. It looks like he moved things up to leave room for the block title letters running along the bottom but that sacrificed the tree somewhat. This style is called “Gothic“ and it dominated romance novels for a decade or so. While trying to figure out what Gothic this came from I looked at quite a few and some of them are pretty amazing! Not surprisingly, the Wildersly novel art is credited to Maguire.

Another lovely color comp by Maguire. Always neat to see the changes from prelim, to comp, to finished art.
