Early Boris Vallejo prelim Owner: Steven Reecy Comment posted on 7/28/2020

It's cool to see that he was pretty satisfied with all the elements after he drew this and stuck to it faithfully in the final painting. Glad to know you're enjoying the prelims. It's certainly a great way to collect nice art at affordable prices! ![]() I definitely am. I think I’m attracted to the extreme ends of the spectrum. I would either like to have a basic work of a master or a master work of a yet unknown artist than somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. And it’s not coincidental that this approach is relatively inexpensive. At some point I might pony up for the more finished work of a master but for now I’m still (safely) getting my feet wet. |

Thats the way a batmobile should look ![]() Agree. I think I remember requesting "old style". I also love the design that sort of looks like an old Hudson. |

Congrats on acquiring another great color comp. But hey, I wouldn't fault you if you DID only collect Maguire art! ![]() I don't mind going heavy on it for a while, but I need to find different kinds of material for some variety. Like I say, I'd love to find some of his crime/noir or GGA stuff at a good price. |

Thanks, I appreciate it and am always glad to find out other people enjoy seeing the art. Yes, I've long been a huge fan of the Gothic genre. I look forward to seeingyour future posts. Would I be correct in assuming you acquired the prelims from Fred? ![]() That's strange. I commented, came back to edit, and it's gone. Ah well. In my message that disappeared, I was going to ask for an introduction to Fred, but then I realized I've already corresponded with him on another piece of art. To clarify, this art came from George H, who's a very nice guy. George introduced me to Fred T because he thought Fred might have something I'm looking for. Fred graciously put a piece of art on a short hold for me. Stay tuned. :) |

It's impossible to say for certain, but I do think it's possible that the second prelim was one he did for potential use on Briar Rose. It could very well be that the art director simply wanted more of a "romantic" cover than a "sexy" one, so decided to go with the one he did. Just like his finished paintings, Maguire's prelims are absolutely beautiful. Congrats! ![]() Thanks, I concur. I'll be posting a couple more interesting Maguire prelims soon. I looked at your galleries, and all I can say is "Wow"....Now THAT is a paperback art collection! I liked that you grouped the Gothic covers. I didn't recognize them as a sub-genre until recently while doing some research on an acquisition...cool, spooky romance covers that were the dominant style for about a decade. |
