DescriptionOriginal artwork for Adventure Comics Vol. 1 #432 pages 2-4 (DC, 1974) by the incomparable talent of Jim Aparo (pencils, inks and letters). Three-page sequence from the grim tale entitled, "The Anguish of...the Spectre," written by Michael Fleisher, who opens with a twilight scene as a trio of clandestine villains break into the estate of wealthy industrialist, Adrian Sterling. After scaling the perimeter wall, one perpetuator easily takes out the pair of attacking Dobermans with his revolver and they soon vault over the high-tech “electric-eye” fence. All the security measures now penetrated and compromised, they complete their mission by planting a bomb on the bottom of the estate’s pool, set to detonate the next morning at 8:30am.On page 4, the identities of each antagonist are revealed who include hairdressers Eric and Peter and the evil, vain vixen model, Vera. As acting leader of this murderous gang, Vera orders her co-conspirators back to work as normal, which will provide convincing alibis for them when industrialist Adrian Sterling is blown to kingdom come while relaxing in his pool the next morning. Sterling would soon be revealed as the father of Gwendolyn Sterling - the love interest for Jim Corrigan during this superb series. Aparo is at the apex in his prime period here and these issues are considered to represent the Spectre stories par excellence, bar none. Original artwork from this brief, yet remarkable run in Adventure Comics #431-440 is very rare and highly prized after among seasoned collectors. This unforgettable series firmly established the Astral Avenger as the top Bad-Ass in the entire DC Universe, a supernatural superhero totally unrivaled in power and Divine authority, granted unto him by the Almighty Himself, as he acted as Judge, Jury and Executioner upon evildoers. Writer Michael Fleisher's storylines were darkly grim, gritty and gruesome, while artist Jim Aparo's illustrations were simply breathtaking and considered by many to be the very best effort and execution of his entire legendary career.
