Description
To me, Gene Colan (or Adam Austin, as he was identifying himself in Marvel Comics, these days) will be forever linked to the first episodes of the Sub-Mariner in Tales to Astonish.

The serial approach of the whole series made it look like a continuous story with no end in sight, always jumping back to some new twist whenever some sort of resolution seemed to materialize...

In a luxurious, fantasy-rich pattern, Gene Colan reigned supreme, creating structures and landscapes in which were dwelling larger than life characters, first of all, of course, Prince Namor...

Having established the format, or, at least, rejuvenating it from original creator Bill Everett, Gene went on to further glories while no less gifted artists (the likes of John Buscema, Marie Severin, or Bill Everett himself) took to the challenge with gusto.

But Gene would come back occasionally, like on this couple of early issues of the title where the Sub-Mariner fights evil Captain Barracuda. At one moment, Namor finds himself (unjustly) attacked by the US Navy and he replies with his usual style...

And this is where this page happens, folks!

A fantastically dynamic page where the Atlantean Prince jumps constantly from one side to another at full speed, while the hapless sailors seem to move only in slow motion, if they move at all...

Gene Colan excels in those acrobatic scenes in which he puts incredible physical tension into his main characters, almost to the point of distortion (see Panel 3).

Meanwhile, he constantly changing postures and angles to accelerate the plot, even reshaping panel borders to the limit of readability...

Add Georgie Klein's pristine inks to the mix and you have some true dynamite Marvel Silver Age wonderment!

What else can I say? Oh, yes, I know: Imperius Rex!

What a dynamic page!  Klein inks look great, not an inker I have a great deal of familiarity with but worth looking into.

Thanks Jeff! I first noticed Georgie Klein when I discovered his inks on John Buscema's pencils in his early issues of the Avengers... I think he really helped John in the definition of his style, so sharp and clear were his inks. Now, wherever I find his signature, these are the main assets I see in his art. And it works as well for Gene Colan, which is why I'm quite happy with this page!

Thanks Bill! I couldn't agree more! It looks like Namor is at the center of the whirlwind he created!

Thanks Jason! I agree with you: George Klein apparently took great care to define the right texture for each structure and shade...

Thanks John! It strikes me I have never seen Namor smile or laugh... let alone crack a joke! Still...
