Description
Beautiful illustration for the story “Sanctuary” by Allan Swinton, published in Liberty Magazine on September 21, 1929. Subtitle reads, “He sat with bowed head and hands idle till presently the sixth sense told him he was not alone.” Oil on canvas (38” x 36”).

Herbert Stoops was a well-known illustrator of the 1920s, and was a frequent contributor to many of the popular publications of the day, including Cosmopolitan, Colliers, McCall’s, Lady's Home Journal, and Liberty. He was also a pulp artist, doing covers for Blue Book, among others. In 2009, the Society if Illustrators inducted Stoops into the Illustrator’s Hall of Fame.
