Description

The film Manhunter (1986), is of course the first film in a series of films after the books by Thomas Harris, which feature Dr. Hannibal Lector (Lecktor in Manhunter). The serial killer, Francis Dolarhyde, has a fascination with the paintings of William Blake, and believes that he becomes "The Great Red Dragon" as he kills his victims.

Director Michael Mann wanted William Blake's painting altered for the film by removing the extra heads on the dragon and darkening the drowning people at the bottom. He felt these were distracting to the main subjects.

This is the preliminary by Joseph Bernard (after William Blake) that eventually became the painting hanging in Dolarhyde's house in the film.
