Description
Avengers #69 p12-13 Splash Kang Sal Buscema pencils This two-page splash is one of my most favorite pieces in my collection. The Avengers are gathered in Kang's palace, with Ravonna in some sort of stasis. Kang has chosen the Avengers as his pieces in a game of life and death against the Grandmaster. An unbelievable sense of awe and wonder.

Baby brother Sal following in his big brother's footsteps and doing him proud.  Great DPS!

Excellent layout by Sal here, with super crisp inks by Grainger.  Great example of early S Buscema

Boy, did I want this piece!  I bought this issue off the stand, and was blown away by the story and art.

I know how you feel. That first issue of Avengers (#98 for me) was mindblowing  - I was only 10 years old and completed the entire run by age 12.

Great theatre - a lovely sense of space. And how fantastic to get a full roll call of the Avengers gathered together. Great DPS!

Patrick, thanks for this comment! I maybe love the DPS in Avengers 100 by Barry Smith even more, so it made me think - what do these pages have in common? They both set a mood, using the DPS to do so - the vastness of Kang's court and influence in this page and the somber British country side in Avengers 100. Both are the calm before the storm. In both, the characters are simply standing and interacting, not in some frenetic battle scene filling every inch. Emotions between the characters are evident, here with Hank and Jan and in the Avengers 100 the quiet triangle between Wanda, her brother and the Vision. Both, majestic!

Right you are Andrew -- forgot about that one, even though it came up at auction recently. That Windsor-Smith DPS in 100 is truly great as well. Can't think of too many other historic Avengers DPS -- Zodiac intro'd in #72 ....?

Regardless, this spread is a jaw-dropper when you turn the page. Congrats again.
