Description
Walt Howarth was a genuine legend who you've probably never heard of.

In the UK, an "Annual" is a large hardback book usually based on a TV show, pop group or the like, containing strip and text stories, features, quizzes and the like and are generally given as Christmas presents to children.

Walt was the British artist who did nearly every UK annual cover from the 1960's you've ever seen; Doctor Who, Man from UNCLE, Gunsmoke, the Munsters, the Beatles... the list is endless. He also did a lot of commercial work including jigsaws, posters and the like.

He did "cartoony" well, but also utilised a photorealistic painted style that worked then, and works now.

Sadly, Walt died in 2008, at the age of 80, but this piece, done when he was a slip of a thing of around 77, puts artists decades his juniors to complete and absolute shame.

As he did the Doctor Who annual covers back in the 60's when the series was relaunched in 2006 he produced "notional" Annual covers in the style of his 1960's classics, but using the new cast.

So here we have Christopher Ecclestone as the 9th Doctor, Billie Piper as Rose and appearances by the Moxx of Ballhoon and the Face of Bo, as well as the new TARDIS console room.

Just gorgeous.

Great idea for a commission - works very well in capturing the 'feel' of the early works . . .

I have never seen this artwork before. Its beautiful. I have just got a Roger Moore Saint 1969 annual cover done by him that looks wonderful too. What a long career he had.
