DescriptionWhile perusing the online IX show I saw this piece by Clare. At first I thought "is that Elric?"and then thought, I don't care, this piece checks off a lot of my 'boxes'. Elric? bird of prey, cosmic sky. Just love this piece!! I asked Clare about inspiration for the piece- this is what she said: Of course! My inspiration was, in essence, let's make falconry even more magical. I spent a lot of time in the UK when I was little and got to hang out with falconers (one of whom now uses his hawks to do pest control on the pigeons in Trafalgar Square!) so birds of prey are a favorite of mine, too. I love painting them and often find myself incorporating them somehow when I get to paint anything for myself. I got the chance to study with Donato Giancola a few years ago and have always been inspired by his gorgeous starscapes but realized this summer I still hadn't attempted one for myself. I called him and picked his brain a bit while I was working on it, so this one has his seal of approval haha! I didn't have a specific character in mind, though I love the Elric interpretation. It was more of a story kernel than anything pulled from an existing world. I imagined a dark army, moving on a moonless night, preparing to attack. The eldritch leader launches their shadowhawk either as an assassin or a scout before the army strikes. I used myself as a reference for the piece, so I had been thinking of the falconer as a woman, but in the end it doesn't really matter for my version of the story. One of my favorite things about painting fantasy scenes is building those moments because everybody can create their own little magical bubbles of story from them, whether it's linking to an existing book or world or something all their own. A friend of mine thought this was a vampire legion, fighting at night because they couldn't under the sun. I'd be delighted to hear if you or your wife have your own stories for it, half the time those are what inspire my next paintings haha! Please let me know if there's anything else you're curious about! Cheers, Clare so with Clare's blessing I am changing the name of this piece. 8 ) Social/Sharing |
