First, let me apologize in advance for the pain I am about to inflict on all of you. Especially if you are the current or former owner of any of these pieces. I figured since I have a near complete set of Mitch’s old mail order catalogs, it might be “fun” (if not masochistic) to take a stroll down memory lane. But take heart. For even though most (if not all) of these posts will be almost unbearable and cringe worthy to many of you, just remember that 20-30 years from now, these will be the “good old days” to some new collector just starting out.
What is very interesting to note here is that during this 9-year span of catalogs (1984-1993), there is nothing here that is priced over (or anywhere near) $1000. Actually (with the exception of the Killing Joke page), nothing even breaks the $500 range. Absolutely incredible for pieces that could all easily be five figures (or more) today! By the way, I’ve got dozens and dozens of these. So I’ll be posting them in chunks from time to time (to prolong the torture). Social/Sharing |

Always loved this late silver-age cover. Jack never phoned it in.The first Kirby cover I got was in 1993, and it was $700 (Sandman 3).

I think it was probably around 1991 that I made the conscious decision to add a Kirby to my collection. At the time, it didn't impact me financially because I ended up trading for it (approx. $500 trade value I think). And the fact that I didn't have to spend any money probably had to do with with why I felt no sense of urgency about Kirby's escalating art market. By the time I figured it out, the prices were already out of reach.

Cool to see - I hope you don't mind me adding this as an additional image to the original in my CAF...I wish I had bought it in 1990!

Not at all, not at all. By all means, please do. I had no idea you owned this one. I'm so jealous. Just an absolutely great Kirby cover. And while I'm sure you would have preferred to pay the 1990 price, at least you have it. That really is the only thing that truly matters. Congratulations sir!
