Here's a Virgil Finlay illustration I picked up long ago -- in this case 16 years ago. It's from Famous Fantastic Mysteries, June 1953, for the poem "Haunted Hostel" by Emma L'Hommedieu Frost.

Not sure I've seen anything so effective that still holds up as genuinely terrifying from that era before, very nice
