DescriptionAt first blush, this painting would appear to be Harold S. DeLay's cover to the December 1938 issue of the pulp, Golden Fleece, illustrating "Dead Man Alive" by the prolific H. Bedford-Jones.However, it's not that painting, but instead is a recreation painted by DeLay in 1943. Sometime in the 1930's, DeLay and his wife separated, and DeLay moved to New York City, where he lived with a dancer/actress, Emma S. Wood (professional name Swan Wood). They lived together until his death in 1947. On the back of the recreation, Swan wrote several notes, including that this was painted by DeLay in NYC on September 12, 1943 and given to her as a birthday gift. Swan and Harold were the models. I'll post a scan of the pulp cover in the comments. Social/Sharing |
