DescriptionDefinitely a memorable moment of my adolescence, the death of Jason Todd (via a 900 number no less!) was a cultural moment as well. Yes, he ended up being resurrected (its a comic book run by a corporation...), but the event itself created a fissure in my belief that whatever happened in the real world (my world) would have little impact on my comic characters' universe. And then BLAM, here comes Death in the Family with real consequences.I knew better than to ask my parents if I could dial a 900 number in 1988, so I was a passive observer in this PR stunt. But I was buying these issues from my LCS throughout the series and waited like everyone else for the results. Holding the OA for the house ad that advertised that 1-900 number is just so very cool. Artistically, for Aparo these are middle-of-the-fairway renditions. But culturally, they have no peer. BC, just a thanks for offering this up before it went to auction. It made it to the right home, no matter how circuitous the journey. Social/Sharing |

You had to be there buying DC comics every month off the grocery spinner or at the Waldenbooks in the mall (remember those?) and seeing those house ads with the flames and someone getting closer and closer... The buildup to this moment was huge! And Starlin and Aparo delivered a great story with lots of heart that elevated it above being just a gimmick.

Not bad for an outrageous pr stunt. These comic guys have no shame. What will they do next? Pretend to kill Superman???
