I picked this up cheap( $150) a couple years ago- yes, I know it has a few stains, but like most antiques it seems to add to the gravitas of the piece, at least for me. The strip started in 1942, with the good Captain helping partisans behind enemy lines. Unfortunately, the Allied victory in 1945 sealed the fate of many war features, and this was one of them. Frank Tinsley, along with Blakeslee and Belarski, was considered one of the great aviation pulp cover artists of the 1930's, and his expertise on the mechanicals in panels 4 and 5 shows his strength. However, his weakness was drawing people, and by this time the syndicate demanded he rectify the defect. So he hired a ghost artist for the non-aviation people panels, most likely Lou Fine in this example(per Jerry Bails and Maurice Horn), who was also ghosting the Spirit at the time. It looks like Fine's work of the period, especially the Captain himself and Wanda's 'Ellen Dolan' haircut style.

The star of this piece is the final double panel (13 x 9 inches), drawn by Fine and probably hand colored at the time it was given to a fan( the salutation is on the back). This is the only example I've seen in person, but tearsheets can be found, and the strip ran in Big Shot Comics starting with issue #29.
