Description

Matt Wagner recently completed this stunning Grendel commission for me; my request was for something reminiscent of the back cover of the Comico Black Book which has one of my all-time favorite images of Grendel. I wanted a front-facing Grendel and had initially hoped Matt would agree to use the same technique as on the original which was pastel pencils over a black board. He politely declined to recreate that same technique for this one, but assured me that I'd be happy with the results. He wound up using pencil, ink, acrylic paints, and some wash effects and, needless to say, I could not be happier with the final piece!

Jim, this is absolutely STUNNING. Not only is it a (the?) signature Grendel piece, it is a signature Matt Wagner piece, chock full of the nuts and bolts that distinguish him and his talent: the layout, the shading on Grendel’s clothing, the majesty and wonder of the city architecture, the red rose and blood red on the piece... Good heavens - what a way to start out 2021! Incredible piece - congratulations!

This is an amazing piece! I think Matt Wagner outdid himself with this one. I could see this in a second “Art of Grendel” book.
