Description

(Warner Bros Animation) Batman: The Animated Series premiered in September 1992 and went on to become one of the most loved and acclaimed animated series of all time.

Drawing heavily from the Fleischer cartoons of the 40s, the series lovingly combined the retro art deco look with the ambiance of the 1989 Tim Burton Batman film. Bruce Timm's clean-lined character designs went on to inspire countless animated shows to follow, including the entire DC animated universe.

This 2-cel setup on its hand-painted master background features my favorite villain from my favorite episode: Mr. Freeze from "Heart of Ice". The episode was the 14th episode produced, but it was the 3rd to air, premiering on September 7, 1992. It won an Emmy for its writing, and is consistently voted the best episode of the entire series. The episode completely reinvigorated Mr. Freeze, giving him a tragic backstory and a sympathetic depth to his character.

I typically only collect 1 cel per series, but I had to make an exception to my rule for Batman:TAS, with two cels from this episode (this one, and a setup with batman).
