DescriptionMy second, and final, Diego Bernard commission, and it's something I have a love/hate relationship with (for right now) =)First off, I love this piece, and I think it came out wonderful. It's another "Lady Death in homage" in my collection to an artist's piece that I've admired for years (this time being J Scott Campbell), and Diego did another brilliant job of capturing the original art's essence in his own style. HOWEVER... With deep love comes great criticism, and I found myself sucked into this piece so much that I began nitpicking every little thing I could find. And sadly, there's just one error I'm seeing that almost breaks my heart. Now, I'm of the mind to not even say what it is in case anyone who's looking doesn't see it and can come to really enjoy this art without criticism. And while Diego did follow all of my criticisms of J Scott's original art and fix them with ease (mainly that the bed sheet JSC drew behind his Sleeping Beauty character's butt was in error as her leg sticks through some kind of hole that he didn't draw), it's that there's a new one here that's a bit hard to correct or reason with. And please don't get me wrong - Diego was great in sending me prelim sketches before he drew the final ones, and I was pretty happy with what he originally sketched out. But he changed an element in this final art without telling me, and that one element dominoed and changed other elements in relation =( So now it's a little different, and there's a new glaring error that I just can't un-see =( So, I love this piece. And I love it so much that it frustrates me that I see an error that maybe others won't, lol. But deep down I know it's a masterpiece, and hopefully over time my excitement and disappointment will soften so I can take the good and the bad all in one big, loving embrace =) Update 3/3/2023 I recently had this piece digitally inked, and my comments about the process are in the reply section below Social/Sharing |

I'm sorry an error in this piece has taken over enjoying this piece But this is absolutely beautiful. Diego really has come into his own in illustrating Lady Death and i am extremely happy for him.

I was really worried about asking for this inking commission, let alone posting the results here talking about it. I don't know artist-etiquette, and I wasn't sure if asking for an inker to change original art because of my own view of it "missing something" is insulting or not. But I tried asking other professional artists about this, and they all kinda gave grey-area answers about you not being wrong to have inkers do changes to art if you wanted it. But then they would also say that it's not something they would enthusiastically do themselves, so it took me awhile to even gain the confidence to finally decide to look for an inker.
So, I started looking for an inker in 2022, and it took a good year's amount of time until I found someone who was up to the challenge of working with Diego's amazing original pencils and trying to add in a missing arm - which I think the inker (Matthew Seaborne) nailed and did a tremendous job with here. But it did take some trial-and-error for him to finally figure out how to even add to this (higher-brow commissioned) art that's a JSC homage piece drawn expertly by Diego. So, I know real work went into his process, and I'm genuinely happy not only with the result he came up with but also with how that arm now makes the original piece art not stick out like a sore thumb for me anymore. Plus, I had him digitally ink over the original just cuz I think that could be insulting to the original artist (artists in general) if the original piece itself was somehow "destroyed" by overlaying these inks that change it.
In any case, all credit goes to Matthew for his willingness to work with me. We even did a few back-and-forth messages through Twitter to try and figure out what to do, so I know it was definitely tough to figure out where to even start (especially since there were other inkers that I did talk to about this inking idea who just couldn't figure it out before I finally found Matthew)
