DescriptionHere is an early splash page from McFarlane in his stint at Marvel on his first prolonged title run. One can contrast this large image with his work from issue 339 and beyond as he continued to develop his line work for his signature Hulk style. Moreover, you can also see the difference in inking styles between Fredericks and Sanders. In my opinion, Sanders really accentuated McFarlane's pencils with his dynamic inking. While maybe not fully justified, I compare Fredericks inking work on McFarlane to Colletta's style on George Perez. It was enough to visualize, but it left you wanting more. I know that McFarlane inked himself on a couple of issues in the 340s, and that further defined him as his own force for one who can ink Todd's pencils best.Regardless, buying McFarlane IH pages now has become a very expensive endeavour. Up until about eight years ago, you could still purchase McFarlane IH interior pages for less than four figures. McFarlane IH pages were relatively inexpensive through the naughts, and I was fortunate to purchase this splash back in 2004 while the US Army had me deployed to Iraq. Social/Sharing |

Agreed that Fredericks wasn't the best inker for Todd, but still an amazing page! I'd be happy to buy it from you :)

Fantastic page! It has some influences in my opinion. Perez but also Byrne and Ditko! What a great page!

Glad you were able to get this when you did, PR - as you note, just a little more difficult now :) A really outstanding McFarlane Hulk example and of McFarlane's early work in general. Smashingly good! Congrats!
