Description

In the wake of the release of Wakanda Forever, I wanted to share an incredible display of sea monsters, architecture, armies, and mayhem, in a glorious cacophony of pencilling mastery by the great Leinil Yu.

Isn’t it crazy how a certain artist can draw a popular (or at least storied) character and it’s like you’re seeing them for the first time? For instance, I had NO idea how intense the vacuum was in my life for a Leinil Yu-drawn Attuma until I saw this piece.

Attuma’s usually thought of as a bit of a joke, right? Like, what is it that he actually wears on his head? It always makes me think of some kind of helmet thing, maybe... with a set of bunny ears or something...? But when I saw this I realized what a terror of the deep he could be, coming at you out of the cold, hellish depths, wearing the stuffed and mounted hide (or better/worse still, the freshly killed corpse) of some feared sea devil... Absolutely beautiful (you know, in that “freshly-killed-corpse-of-a-feared-sea-devil” kind of way).

Thank you, Leinil and Kwan for rocking my world (yet again)!

Talokan in the house! Attuma looks much better wearing the deep sea monster hide rather than the Power Ranger helmet. Agreed 100%! And I really enjoyed how they made him the silent bruiser in the movie. I love the energy of Yu's pencils, they just don't need inks. Great page, Jason. Wakanda Forever!

Attuma looks so great here-- I loved Waid/Yu's run on this title! Sea monsters are some of my favorite monsters!

Well, the helmet appears to have been constructed to make it look like Attuma's head is inside a monster's mouth and he also had Abomination ears. What is all that supposed to signify though? I'll tell you. I'll tell you that I don't have even the most remote idea that would allow me to even hazard a guess! All I know is that in the hands a of a great artist (and I've spoken on this topic before), even silly loking costume designs can somehow appear to look pretty f#@!%4 cool, as we see here! Carry on, my wayward son....

Ooh, I know the answer to this one! Wearing a sea monster's decapitated head as a helm signifies that Attuma can kill a sea monster :) Assuming the aspect of a sea monster signifies that he will act in a sea-monstrous fashion.

How Attuma gets started, they're started by the Lemur people and
They get mad seein' Namor is back and somebody else is rulin'
They tell me that ambition is very hard to resist
This helmet mayhem, ooh, they just are fish
Maybe you think it's cute, but Hulk is now impressed
Leinil Yu draw line only with the pencils, he’s the best

Look at Jason Hussa, buyin' this very page
I just need some time, some time to get Yu paid from
From all Attuma, I can't Waid it no more
My best friend said there's one out now about me and the new Namor

Fantastic Attuma example.  Enjoyed his rendition in Wakanda forever. Leinil's detailed masterful pencil work is a sight to behold

Little known fact. When Attuma was child he loved to read comics and he was liked the rest of us and once the book was read he would pore over the ads. Where he stumbled upon the Sea Monkeys. He ordered as many as he could and upon raising them he would have battle in the Colosseum until he finally got a enomous Sea Monkey to rule the depths with but unfortunately the Sea Monkey slipped on a piece of seaweed hitting its head and killing itself; thus ruining Attuma's dream of Sea dominace. To honor his beloved pet he now wears him as his helmet/armour.

Yu's SO meanwith that pencil!  Nice storytelling, and from a pure illustration point of view, Attuma ne'er looked so good.  I'm sure you've pored over them graphite strokes lots :)  Sweet page, man, and timely posted!  Congrats!

Wow! Breathtaking pencils by Leinil Yu! Love that first panel with Attuma silhouetted against the massive sea monster rising from the sea! Each of the following panels builds the sense of Attuma gathering his troops for a serious attack. And that last panel with his face peering out from whatever creature's skull was used for his helmet is just chilling. Great pick-up!
